Fishing Notes

This afternoon I fished with my buddy David Brcic, Owner of Soccer Master and former USA Soccer National Team Goalie. We started fishing about 12:30 and fished until 5:30. After catching 5 good ones yesterday in 15′-20′ brush piles around the toll bridge area, I really thought that bite would be good today in the Glaize, but I only had one good keeper out of pile with the jig, it weighed 3.12# on my scale. I recently sunk about 20 new piles and Im still getting used to hitting them consistently, but when I did hit them those piles just did not produce today, only that one good keeper and one just short of 15″.

David dragged a texas rigged plum worm most of the day in the brush but no hook ups. We also dragged our bottom baits around some main lake points with big rocks with no bites. The wind was very light today, the sun was bright, the dam has lowered the water and for us the bass just were not biting on the patterns we were running.

When the sun finally got at the right angle to create some shade on the banks with big rocks and had some wind we ran top water baits for an hour. David caught a nice keeper on the buzz bait on a main lake point and I had two big blow ups on the buzz bait that did not hook up, but those bites were encouraging as that pattern should be coming on good in the coming weeks. David through the Whopper Plopper a bit today as well with no bites.

While working those main lake banks with shade and bit of wind, I threw the stick bait on the windy/shady channel side corner of a dock and caught a very healthy KY bass, probably 2.5 to 3 pounds. While there are a lot of baits to catch em on main lake dock corners, such as top water, square bill, spiinner bait, free falling a jig, swim bait and others, my favorite this time of the year is the stick bait. It just seems like if they are there along the side or on the corners, the stick bait has produced most consistently for me.

Overall, although we had 3 keepers the bite was not very good for us and I was a bit disappointed as I thought the brush pile bite would be better today than yesterday due to the slack wind. The water has stained up a bit as the dam is periodically pulling water pretty heavily in the early evening the past couple of days. I also noticed today, that while many of the big creeks have a lot of bait fish, in the smaller pockets the bait fish have seemed to pull about halfway out of the creek. There is definitely a transition going on right now. I did not flip docks today, but I would bet that bite could have been pretty good today on mid cove and secondary point docks. I’ll check that bite tomorrow.
