Fishing Notes

Today Jack and I took off from PB2 headed to the Big Niangua with high expectations after we both had good days of practice this week fishing main lake points, secondary points, creek channel swings and shallow backs of coves. We quickly found out that today was way different, no wind, warning water, etc. After only catching 3 small Kentucky bass by noon time, we knew it was time to make a big move. We started to fish shallower water fishing very close to the bank (our bites this week were a bit off the banks) and started to catch them. We saw bait fish flickering right on the bank, so we concentrated on a shallow on the bank pattern and caught 5 additional keepers including a 3 pound small mouth and a 5.01 pound large mouth both in 2-5′ of water. This afternoon we also had a bit or cloud cover, the water temps were slightly rising shallow and slight bit of wind, which likely contributed to the good afternoon bite. From 1:00 – 2:30 we probably caught at least a dozen bass and most of our good keepers. While we are happy with 14.05 pounds and 8th place out of 32 boats, we simply ran out of time as the fish were biting good when we needed to head back for the weigh in. Looking back at the day, we just needed some sort of a morning bite and make adjustments earlier in the day. Finally Happy Birthday to my awesome Son Robbie, while he did not fish today due to other commitments, I could not be more proud of him. All in all a good day fishing and the bite is going to just get better as the water continues to warm up.
